[Verified] On July 5, 1779, British forces under General Tryon landed at East Haven as part of the two-pronged assault on New Haven. About 50 local patriots opened fire but could not prevent the landing. The British burned 11 houses, 6 stores, and 6 barns. - CT Sons of the American Revolution
